2021 began with a bang, thanks to the alignment of Mars-Uranus-Jupiter-Saturn-Pluto. The last four years have felt like a car chase along a cliff with no guardrails with a madman at the wheel. On January 6th, it felt like maybe we were finally driving off the cliff. But, in an action-movie-style deus ex machina moment of grace, the “good guy” (from my perspective at least) pushed the madman out of the car and took the wheel. The Jupiter-Uranus square (December 2020 — March 2021) brought the satisfaction of experiencing happy resolution after a crescendo of nail-biting drama. Jupiter-Uranus can give…

2020 is behind us, and while a part of me is tempted to say “good riddance”, the greater part finds itself in awe of the amazing year that just passed. My heart goes out to all those who have suffered directly from the pandemic, have gotten sick, have lost loved ones, or have lasting complications from the illness, as well as those who have lost jobs and businesses as a result of the lockdowns. Even for those of us fortunate enough to have our health and security, most have suffered from the restrictions to our basic freedoms and from the…

As I contemplate the Grand Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter that will reach exactitude on December 21, I wonder about the very nature of astrology itself, as well as the nature of meaning-making. The fact that astrology works amazes me. Where did it come from? How much of it involves perception, and how much of it involves projection? Ultimately, I see astrology as a key to accessing multidimensional awareness from an ordinary, earthly state of consciousness. …

Newgrange at the Winter Solstice

December is here and that means… THE END OF 2020! It seems that throughout this whole decade, or at least the last half of the decade, the words on everybody’s lips around New Year’s have been “that was the worst year ever, I hope the next one is better”. This year may be the grandaddy of them all. Since 2018 we’ve been caught in Saturn and Pluto’s iron jaws, and over the last year Jupiter has joined in, raising the stakes. Though this triple conjunction has been going on for almost a year, Jupiter and Saturn have not yet made…

The Mars retrograde ends tomorrow. But, Mars will still take some time to gain speed and move back through the degrees that it recently transited, which means that the god of war will still be a major presence for the next couple of months. And in case you forgot (or repressed the memory), Mars squared Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter during this retrograde, which means it will square them again on its way out. A square always represents a clash or challenge of some kind. Around the time Mars last squared Pluto, on October 9, the plot to kidnap Michigan governor…

Everybody’s lives have changed in profound ways over the last year. The Saturn-Pluto-Jupiter conjunction, which I mention pretty much every time I mention anything about astrology, has forced many issues for us as individuals, as a culture, and as a species. Pluto (the force of relentless evolutionary change) and Saturn (the force of cultural and egoic preservation and real-life limits) have been in a high-stakes armwrestling match, with Jupiter (the force of amplification and payoffs) egging them on, always raising the stakes and urging the competitors to outdo themselves. …

Guernica, by Picasso

Today, October 13th, Mercury turns retrograde in Scorpio, opposing Uranus. On October 16th, there will be a New Moon in Libra. The New Moon will form a powerful T-Square to Saturn, Pluto, Jupiter, and Mars. Mars is still retrograde.

The longterm Saturn-Pluto-Jupiter triple conjunction in Capricorn is the keynote of the time, so anything we might say about Mercury, Mars, or the lunar cycle must refer back to it. We are living in an apocalypse, meaning a time of uncovering. …

Pluto stationed direct a couple days ago, making Pluto more present in the collective consciousness (and collective unconscious). I’m a fairly Plutonian person, interested in the dark and hidden corners of the psyche and primed for the kind of healing and total transformation that can only come through a deep inner confrontation. Not for the faint of heart, but that’s the way it is. Such work takes a certain obsessive, relentless focus.

I’ve been contemplating Pluto a lot from my new perch in Maui. There are so many strands in the Pluto tapestry… For one thing, Pluto represents a certain…

Mars Retrograde began yesterday with yet another installment of the “you can’t make this shit up” category of astrological events. Thanks to a combination of smoke and clouds, this is what it looked like in Northern California yesterday (see the above picture of the Martian surface). When a planet changes direction, the planet is the closest to earth it can be and it appears to come to a stop. The planet’s energy is more present. Mars, the god of war, anger, and conflict is more “present” right now. Can anyone else say “duh”? Mars is also about courage, right boundaries…

“Any Central Figure” by Orgyan Chopel

The lunar nodes recently moved into Gemini and Sagittarius, where they will remain for the next year and a half. With the nodes moving through the signs of meaning and perception, let’s prepare to have our minds blown. Let’s also acknowledge that maybe we don’t want our minds to be blown.

One thing we might all agree on is the fact that people cannot seem to agree on much. In an era of ideological extremism manifest through political division, identity politics, fake news, conspiracy theories, twitter battles, etc., we are all called to question how we make sense of the…
